Patient Companion

Job Summary / Purpose
The patient companion performs close and/or continuous observation of pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients who may be at risk for adverse events such as falls, self‑injury or harm to others in accordance with the training and established methods and procedures of the hospital. The patient companion provides direct observation of patients as directed by a nurse.

• Provide direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of the nursing staff and/or nursing supervisor.
• Adhere to clinical policies and procedures when performing patient companion tasks.
• Be flexible and cope successfully with a variety of situations, personalities and the changing work environment.
• Demonstrate understanding of the importance of safety.
• Communicate with patients in a manner that is respectful of their age, culture, and education.
• Only accept delegated tasks that are competent to perform, and communicate need for additional information, assistance or guidance as needed.
• Perform timely and accurate documentation as required by area of employment.
• Greet patients and visitors with a friendly manner upon arrival and orient them to the room/unit.
• Apply the knowledge and skills needed to do the job.
• Keep informed about practices, procedures, and new developments related to own work.

• High School graduate or equivalent.

• BLS within 30 days of employment.

• Excellent interpersonal skills required.

• Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
