About the Role

As a Rail Yard Operator
, you'll play a key role in railcar logistics managing track usage, coordinating car movement, and safely operating locomotives or Rail Kings. You'll work hands-on in a fast-paced rail yard environment, ensuring safe, timely, and accurate movement of rail cars between yard and facility buildings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and manage track layout within the rail yard
  • Operate manual switches to align railcars to the correct tracks
  • Ensure accurate car count and correct railcar positioning on tracks
  • Act as a conductor communicating precise directions to the Engineer
  • Operate a Locomotive or Rail King safely and efficiently
  • Collaborate closely with the Rail Yard Lead and facility teams
  • Maintain strict adherence to company and regulatory safety procedures
  • Report any safety hazards and take appropriate corrective action
  • Perform basic mechanical tasks and ensure yard equipment is operational
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience in a rail yard or transload environment
  • Ability to operate a Locomotive or Rail King, or strong knowledge of rail operations
  • Familiarity with Class 1 or Short Line railroads preferred
  • Proficiency in managing, counting, and routing rail cars
  • Mechanically inclined; able to make minor adjustments to equipment
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and working outdoors in all weather
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Valid Drivers License
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow operational instructions
  • Standard schedule: 8.5 to 10-hour days/5 to 6 days per week (so weekly overtime)
  • Flexible availability for weekend and holiday shifts
