Accountant, Tax Accountant, Accounting Manager

About the Role

A well-established accountancy practice in Stevenage is seeking an experienced and confident Accountant to join their growing team. This is a hands-on role supporting a varied portfolio of clients across multiple sectors, delivering high-quality accounting, tax, and advisory services. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a busy practice environment and enjoy building strong client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of SME clients, acting as their main point of contact
• Prepare year-end accounts for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies
• Complete corporation tax returns, personal tax returns, and VAT submissions
• Handle bookkeeping and management accounts as required
• Support clients with queries around accounting software (Xero, Quick Books, Sage)
• Assist with payroll processing when needed
• Review work prepared by junior team members and provide guidance
• Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards and HMRC regulations
• Contribute to process improvements and support the wider practice team

Skills & Experience Required

• Previous experience working within an accountancy practice (essential)
• ACCA/ACA qualified or part-qualified, or qualified by experience
• Strong knowledge of UK accounting standards and tax requirements
• Confident preparing accounts from incomplete records
• Proficient with cloud accounting software (Xero preferred)
• Excellent communication skills and a client-focused approach
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
• A proactive mindset and willingness to support colleagues
