Salary: c £85,000-£95,000 basic (DOE) plus competitive package inc car or allowance, healthcare, pension, performance bonus.
Company & ProjectA profitable and stable Tier 1 Main Contractor operating across Hertfordshire and bordering counties is currently looking to grow their commercial team with a Senior Quantity Surveyor. The client has a busy order book in the local market across multiple sectors including Education.
Duties & Responsibilities- Lead the end‑to‑end procurement of work packages, defining scopes, identifying suitable subcontractors and tender reconciliations.
- Manage the project budget as the design progresses from RIBA Stage 3 to 4.
- Proactively identify cost‑saving opportunities and alternative construction methods to align the design with the client’s budget without compromising quality.
- Quantify commercial risks.
- Coordinate with the design team and manage subcontractor design fees and liabilities.
- Act as the commercial lead in transitioning the project to the main contract, negotiating preliminaries, overheads and profit to secure a fair and profitable Second Stage award.
- During on‑site delivery, manage daily commercial functions: measurement & valuations, applications for payment, reconciling accounts, handling sub‑contract orders and enquiries, and settling final accounts.
Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum 7‑10 years+ experience as a Quantity Surveyor, ideally with a Main Contractor.
- Experience on 2‑stage projects and with Pre‑construction Services Agreements (PCSA); previous experience on projects £10m+ as Number 1 QS is essential.
- Education sector experience on projects secured from frameworks is essential.
- Excellent negotiation skills and prior procurement of subcontractors.
- Previous roles:
Senior Quantity Surveyor, Project QS, Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Manager, Senior Cost Manager, Managing Quantity Surveyor. - Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or comparable qualifications (including HNC, BTEC, NVQ or MSc).
