As a Design Engineer, you will play an important part in shaping highway maintenance and improvement schemes from early design through to delivery. You will combine technical design, coordination, and practical problem solving to help deliver safe, efficient schemes that make a real difference to local communities. Working with a collaborative team, you will influence how projects are designed, planned, and built.

Key

responsibilities
  • Support highway projects from early involvement through to construction and handover
  • Produce and review highway designs, drawings, and technical documentation
  • Coordinate project programmes, risks, and progress with delivery teams
  • Work with subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams to enable safe delivery
  • Ensure designs meet national standards and local authority requirements
  • Prepare CDM and health and safety documentation for schemes
  • Manage permits, traffic orders, and statutory approvals
  • Act as a technical point of contact for stakeholders and partners
  • Share knowledge and provide guidance within the design team
Essential skills and requirements
  • Strong background in highway engineering and scheme delivery
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with confidence and clarity
  • Working knowledge of DMRB, TSRGD, CDM Regulations, and safety legislation
  • Experience producing compliant highway designs and buildable solutions
  • Confidence interpreting utility and statutory constraints
  • Clear communication with technical and non-technical colleagues
  • Practical approach to health, safety, and environmental responsibility

    Proficiency in AutoCAD and standard project tools
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • Full UK driving licence
