Cygnet Hospital Stevenage offers a range of secure mental health services for men and women in a purpose-built therapeutic environment where the focus is on maximising positive outcomes and recovery.

We are recruiting for a Casual/Bank Maintenance Assistant who is looking for flexibility and able to work ad‑hoc shifts as and when required to provide cover for annual leave, sickness, training, etc.

You will carry out day‑to‑day maintenance tasks on the fabric of the building, its services and grounds to ensure that our hospital is maintained in a safe and efficient functional order.

No specific qualifications needed; however, applicants should have a general background in maintenance work such as carpentry, plumbing, painting and decorating, and ideally be a car driver.

Responsibilities
  • Undertake day‑to‑day maintenance and planned remedial works to keep building, plant and services in working order, keeping records of call‑outs and routine checks as directed.
  • Carry out a range of tasks including basic joinery, plumbing, painting and general building work.
  • Ensure all equipment used is clean and well maintained.
  • Comply with safe working practices and report faulty equipment and potential hazards.
  • Check the fire alarm points weekly, including fire exits, door retaining devices and fire emergency lights.
  • Test and record all portable appliances as specified in Group procedures.
Qualifications
  • Experienced in a similar role, or have worked in a self‑employed capacity in recent years.
  • Skilled at DIY and general maintenance.
  • Previous experience of repairing various equipment and materials, painting, decorating, plumbing, carpentry and basic wiring work.
  • Working knowledge of health and safety requirements and safe working practices.
  • Willing to travel and hold a full valid driving licence.
  • Able to communicate at all levels and record detailed, accurate maintenance information.
  • Friendly, conscientious and an excellent team member with a positive attitude.
