Medication Technician - Full-Time 1st Shift
North Shore Health – Skilled Nursing Facility
OverviewResponsible for administering medications in the skilled nursing setting. Adheres to the standards of care on the unit, manages the environment to maintain resident safety, and performs duties through the nursing delegation process.
Responsibilities- Perform work assignments in accordance with nursing standards as delegated by the RN.
- Provide medication pass to assigned residents as ordered by the physician and RN.
- Utilize pharmacy, drug references, and licensed nurses for medication questions.
- Maintain awareness of side effects, adverse reactions, contraindications, and medication purposes.
- Administer medication via permitted routes only.
- Take and record vital signs; demonstrate competency for BPs if manual cuff used and report results to nurse.
- Keep medication cart stocked and clean.
- Give/receive report at shift change.
- Maintain assigned work area (nurse station, med cart, medication room, resident care rooms, treatment areas) in a clean, organized, sanitary manner.
- Monitor medication supply and inform nurse if orders are needed.
- Inform nurse of any noted change in condition.
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings as directed by the Director of Nursing.
- Help residents exercise and protect Resident Rights, report complaints, and maintain confidentiality of resident information.
- Follow and adhere to HIPAA requirements, use only necessary protected health information, and report any violations.

- Injections (including SQ or IM) – note: only nurses authorized to administer injections including insulin.
Physical Requirements
Significant physical activity: standing, lifting up to 50 lbs unassisted, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, twisting. Nurses may be required to provide lifting/transfer assistance to residents, sometimes using a lifting device or assistance from other staff.
RequiredEducation and Experience
- Current State certification as a Medication Aide/TMA.
- Maintain state‑required continuing education, with three years of records showing in‑servicing.
- Maintain required work hours as per state guidelines, with three years of records.
- Minimum 1‑year CNA experience.
- Current CPR certification.
- Completed 2000 hours of CNA work and 90‑hour course to become certified as a Medication Aide for nursing homes.
Education and Experience
- Experience in a fast‑paced environment.
- Post‑acute or health care experience preferred.
