Overview
Full-time Overnight Shelter Advocate – shifts typically 10:00 pm to 6:30 am or 11:00 pm to 7:00 am with weekend rotation. This role supports residents experiencing homelessness and works with staff and volunteers to encourage accountability, action, and completion of programming toward long-term, stable housing.
Location:
Stepping Stone Emergency Housing. Salary: $23.00 per hour.
- Supervise, instruct and manage residents in assigned work training, self-care, chores sign-up, living space and shelter cleanliness, safety and security.
- Perform and complete all assigned documentation.
- Provide front office support, including answering telephones, making copies, resident chore sign-up, resident laundry sign-up, accepting donations, and working with volunteers.
- Ensure established policies, procedures, and code of ethics are followed.
- Maintain upkeep and cleanliness of the shelter (e.g., shoveling/salting the patio and loading dock, cleaning back office).
- Receive updates from the previous shift and brief the next shift; attend staff meetings and training; maintain confidentiality per personnel handbook.
- Perform on-call duties on a weekly rotation with the Shelter Advocate team.
- Bachelor's degree in Human Services or at least 2 years of related experience preferred. Non-degreed equivalent experience may be considered.
- Must pass background study per Minnesota Department of Human Services guidelines.
- Experience with individuals experiencing homelessness or mental health/chemical health issues is preferred.
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds or more and to move donations or Stepping Stone property.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; ability to work with diverse people and communities.

Stepping Stone Emergency Housing provides emergency shelter and critical support services to program participants, 18 and older, who are experiencing homelessness as they strive toward self-sufficiency. We operate three programs:
Shelter, Long-Term Housing (LTH) Program, and Hotel.
- Shelter:
Located in Anoka and Stillwater; 24/7 staffed with beds, meals, laundry, showers, and more. Case Managers and Shelter Advocates work with residents one-on-one to create and execute individualized plans to move from homelessness to self-sufficiency. - Long-Term Housing Program (LTH):
Community program offering case management and support services for up to 20 stably housed residents within Anoka County.
Stepping Stone is the only organization of its kind in the counties of Anoka, Washington, Dakota, Scott, and Carver. We are part of the Suburban Metro Area Continuum of Care.
