Overview

Position Summary - The Technical Writer III assists in the design, development, and revision of technical publications and related materials for aviation operations, training, safety, HR and other corporate departments. The technical writer will follow the format of previous documents, to be provided, in order to develop new, unique documents for distribution to customers. The candidate works under minimal supervision in a collaborative team environment.

An ability to conduct independent research is important. The candidate will manage and perform administrative documentation tasks associated with maintaining company operating practices, processes, policies, and procedures. This role will also provide varying amounts of technical support to Company employees for administrative requirements and document access related to technical writing. We are looking for a technical writing master with strong software user skills that is resourceful, organized, and comfortable working independently and as part of a team.

Assuring high-quality documents and completion of workload in a timely manner is vital to the success of this position.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with project managers and designated subject matter experts (SME) to identify and document technical products, assembly, maintenance, and best practices supporting those products.
  • Utilize company designated software to organize, document, and publish company policies and procedures.
  • Design, develop, create, author, produce, format, and distribute physical and electronic technical documents, quickly and accurately, using a variety of web and client-based productivity tools.
  • Create or manipulate graphics, images, schematics, figures, tables or other visual objects to be included in documents using a variety of media resources and formats.
  • Review, proofread, edit, and revise existing material and/or newly created documents to ensure quality, technical correctness, and grammatical accuracy prior to submitting for review and publication.
  • Convert complex and technical information into easily understandable content according to internal and external customer specifications.
  • Consistently interpret and comply with various document standards, formats, instructions, styles, or templates.
  • Work collaboratively alongside a variety of company staff, subject matter experts (SMEs), and other content authors to gain a better understanding of subject matter, the intended audience, and message.
  • Conduct research, quickly acquire knowledge, and gather information on complex topics from a variety of sources, including direct interaction with SMEs, subscription services, printed materials, U.S. Government or military documents, and online sources in order to ensure accuracy and completeness of documents.
  • Assist in training other employees in the use of general technical writing techniques, as applicable.
  • Coordinate document shipments, including the tracking and maintenance of shipment receipt information.
  • Responds to regularly occurring requests for information and assistance; troubleshoots document application/software issues and coordinates for external support to work out unresolved problems.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional writing experience
  • Superior writing and editing skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Pro

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in aircraft operations or a field with similar technical complexity
  • Experience in process development
  • Experience with content management system

Education Requirements:

  • Associate's Degree or higher (Technical Writing, English, Journalism, Communication, or a related discipline), or
  • Certification from an accredited Technical Institute or program, or
  • 5+ years of Technical Writing experience may be substituted for education requirements

Unique skills or certifications needed to perform essential functions of the job:

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills in order to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all employee levels and provide excellent customer service support, specifically when leading discussions and coaching departments through the process of identifying and documenting their procedures.
  • Work under minimal supervision and participates in all phases of document project execution (to include research, design, development and publication).
  • Ability to deliver high quality documentation with a keen eye for detail, particularly in the areas of grammar, structure, format, and spelling.
  • Ability to quickly grasp technical concepts and express them in easily understandable text and/or illustrations
  • Author original content or edit content provided by others to ensure publication of professional, high quality documents and manuals.
