Position: Environment Look Dev Artists

Role Overview

Environment Look Development Artists (Lead and Mid) required for a production at Stirling Animation Studio, a subsidiary of Magic Light Pictures. The role will be offered on a freelance contract, expected to start from September or October 2026 and run until early to mid‑2027.

Responsibilities
  • Create assets and props in Look Development within Unreal Engine.
  • Collaborate with CG Supervisors and Lighting Supervisors to solve CG challenges and achieve the desired final look.
  • Develop efficient shader setups to optimise render farm usage.
  • Maintain and manage standard material libraries using established shading templates for consistency and pipeline efficiency.
  • Design, implement and maintain complex, custom shading networks and materials for high‑priority ("hero") assets when bespoke solutions are required.
  • For Lead roles: allocate work to team members to ensure the department delivers work on time and within project scope.
Qualifications
  • Ideally, prior experience on feature production in a similar role.
  • Proficiency with asset optimisation and Unreal Engine.
  • Ability to work closely with texture and modelling artists to achieve optimal results.
  • Strong grasp of geometry formatting.
  • Capability to build and maintain complex shading networks with artist usability and user‑interface support in mind.
  • Knowledge of Unreal Engine is highly beneficial.
  • Strong collaboration skills within a team environment.
  • Excellent prioritisation, time management and accurate time‑estimating abilities for shot tasks.
  • Artists must be based regionally within the UK (outside the M25); preference for Scotland‑based artists.
Location

Fully remote or Scottish‑based artists will be welcome; hybrid work from the Stirling studio is available.

Contract Type

Freelance contract, starting September or October 2026 and running until early to mid‑2027.

Hours

Standard studio hours are 7 working hours per day (usually 10 am to 6 pm), Monday to Friday. Flexible working hours may be discussed on an individual basis within the production pipeline.
