Offshore Safety & Survival Centre
Marine Institute
(Contractual On-Call Positions)
DUTIES
The successful applicant(s) will deliver theoretical and practical instruction and training in marine, offshore, and industrial emergency response courses as per the Offshore Safety and Survival Centre’s Integrated Management System and applicable governing standards and guidelines. Courses will be primarily delivered at the OSSC, Foxtrap Campus, Marine Base, Holyrood, and occasionally at various locations within Newfoundland & Labrador, and the Northwest Territories/Nunavut.
As an instructor, you will be required to deliver classroom instruction followed by practical demonstrations in firefighting, marine survival, and rescue craft including fast rescue boats. This will include practical exercises including live fire evolutions, open water exercises in a Survival Tank or open water environment. Instructors provide a supervisor role in all practical exercises with a responsibility for life safety including the expectation of ensuring risk management practices are followed.
In addition to theoretical instruction and training, instructors are responsible for administrative duties including, but not limited to, the development of new and existing courses under the direction of applicable standards and the Director of OSSC, and perform other related duties as required. The duties outlined above are not intended to be exhaustive and the successful candidate(s) will be familiarized on the roles and responsibilities including reviewing of a comprehensive job description during the hiring process.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful applicants must have at least four (4) years relevant experience in a marine or offshore environment, relevant three (3) year diploma or approved equivalent, possess a valid Transport Canada Marine medical or approved equivalent; and demonstrated ability to work in and around an aquatic environment. The successful applicant shall hold at a minimum a valid Transport Canada Marine Emergency Duties (MED) certificate and/or current Basic Survival Training (BST) certificate meeting the requirements of the Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board of Transport Canada.
Preference will be given to candidates with superior education, relevant Transport Canada certificates of competencies, previous teaching experience, and/or additional related qualifications. Equivalent qualifications or experience with the Department of National Defence, an emergency organization or a safety and survival training organization may be considered.
