As School Counsellor, you will be a part of the school‑based service delivery team and responsible for developing an annual comprehensive school guidance program. You will provide leadership to school staff, service to students, implement assessments, and participate in response planning for possible critical incidents or traumatic events.
Your work will be guided by the Standards of Practice for School Counsellors: comprehensive guidance program, educational system and ethical responsibilities, student development and diversity, comprehensive assessment, counseling and career development, and crisis intervention.
Required Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of proactive measures in creating a safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment
- Demonstrated experience in individual and group counseling and in utilizing data and resources to support student and school community needs
- Extensive understanding of the assessment process and its implications for student learning and adherence to comprehensive assessment guidelines
- Ability to implement comprehensive assessments, including formal assessment of achievement and cognitive ability (Level A, B, and C Assessments)
- Knowledge of DSM‑5 information relevant to students served
- Understanding of diverse human growth, development, behavior, learning, and promotion of holistic development; knowledge of child development and diverse learning needs
- Understanding of ethical requirements in providing a comprehensive guidance program
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with stakeholder groups, students, parents, and guardians
- Ability to foster partnerships, facilitate conflict mediation and resolution, and collaborate with others
- Strong team‑building, time management, analytical, and problem‑solving skills
- Understanding of career development processes for K‑12 students
- Knowledge of legislation related to child protection, children, and youth
- Understanding of the education system and supporting student learning and development
- Commitment to ongoing professional learning to inform personal practice
- Bachelor of Education
- NL Teaching Certificate – Level IV or higher
- Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology, including courses in psychological assessments
- This position may require the use of a personal vehicle and travel
Annual teacher salary scale contained within the NLTA Provincial Collective Agreement and benefits described in the agreement.
