Office of the Deputy Provost (Marine Institute) and Executive Director (Professional and Continuing Education)

(Contractual Position to November 5, 2027)

Reporting to the Office of the Deputy Provost (Marine Institute) and Executive Director (Professional and Continuing Education) the successful candidate will play a lead role in facilitating and coordinating development and engagement activities, including fundraising and alumni activities, at the Marine Institute. The successful candidate will be responsible for building relationships with and developing services and programs for the Institute’s extensive internal and external community, which include students and employees, alumni, other educational institutions, various levels of government, industry, Indigenous groups, and other organizations.

Duties include working and collaborating with other units within the Marine Institute and Memorial University, particularly the Office of Development and Alumni Engagement; assisting with, and in some cases leading, various development and engagement initiatives; identifying, evaluating, cultivating and soliciting prospective donors, including individuals, corporations and foundations in line with University policies and practices; drafting donor correspondence, gift agreements, briefing notes, basic proposals and other written materials as needed;

developing and successfully achieving fundraising goals; assisting in the planning and execution of a coordinated program for donor relations and working with the stewardship team to enhance the relationship between donors and the Marine Institute of Memorial University; recommending new development and engagement initiatives, including alumni initiatives; assisting with and leading alumni initiatives; assisting with the development and maintenance of the Marine Institute’s alumni social media activities;

working with and updating the alumni and donor database to ensure information and records are accurate and reflect ongoing activity and performing other duties as required. The position will require some national and international travel and work outside regular working hours.

Experience (5-7 years) in a progressively senior development/fundraising/business development role in the education, cultural or not-for-profit sector; graduation with a master’s degree in business administration; a combination of experience and training may be considered. Persuasive and productive communication, diplomacy and negotiation skills that allow success both within the University environment and in the field, as well as the ability to build and maintain productive donor/alumni/industry/partner relationships, manage multiple projects from conception to completion within tightly prescribed timelines, and work both independently and within a team are required.

The successful candidate should have exemplary judgement, written and oral communication skills and be goal-focused. Experience working with the fisheries, marine and ocean technology industries is an asset. Knowledge of the Marine Institute and its unique mandate and responsibilities to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is also an asset. Possession of a valid driver license as issued by the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is required.

$64,361 to $87,763 per annum (Management and Professional Pay Scale)
