Stantec has an opportunity for a Senior Water Resources Engineer / Hydrologist to join our Environmental Services team in Atlantic Canada. The position may be based in Halifax, Fredericton, St. John’s, or other regional offices, with flexibility depending on candidate location.
We are seeking a Senior practitioner to play a key role in advancing our Mine Water practice in Atlantic Canada, with a focus on surface water and integrated mine water management. This role is suited for a practitioner who leads from the front—driving technical excellence, shaping project outcomes, and mentoring developing staff—while contributing to complex mining projects across the full lifecycle.
The successful candidate will lead technical delivery of mine water management services across all phases of mining projects—from environmental assessment and permitting through operations, closure, and long-term monitoring—while influencing project direction and ensuring high-quality, defensible outcomes.
Technical Leadership and Project Delivery
Lead technical work and provide direction on mine water management across project phases:
Environmental assessment and permitting
Feasibility and detailed design
Operations support and optimization
Closure and post-closure water management
As a technical leader you will:
Lead mine water management strategies across the mine lifecycle, including water balances, contact/non-contact water management, diversions, and storage/treatment systems
Lead preparation and senior review of water-related regulatory applications and approvals in Atlantic Canada
Design and oversee hydrotechnical infrastructure for mining operations, including diversions, sedimentation ponds, tailings water systems, conveyance structures, and erosion and sediment controls
Provide technical direction on hydrologic and hydraulic modelling to support mine design, risk assessment, climate resilience, and regulatory compliance
Lead the design and interpretation of water quality and quantity monitoring programs for baseline, effects assessment, and regulatory compliance
Conduct and review water balance assessments, assimilative capacity studies, and receiving environment evaluations to support permitting and operations
Provide technical leadership on mine closure and reclamation, including long-term water management, treatment strategies, drainage design, and post-closure monitoring
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate water management into mine design and closure planning
Provide senior technical review and quality assurance of designs, reports, and permit applications
Ensure deliverables meet internal quality standards and regulatory expectations
Maintain technical leadership by staying current with evolving regulations, best practices, and innovations in mine water management
Mentorship and Team Contribution

Provide ongoing technical guidance and oversight to intermediate and junior staff
Lead by example in technical work, problem-solving, and professional practice
