Fire Specialist Training Officer

Reporting to the Deputy Fire Marshal, the Fire Specialist Training Officer (Officer) is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing public and professional fire training programs for municipal, industrial, commercial, and institutional fire protection agencies. The Officer assists with implementing fire safety prevention programs across all sectors within Nunavut.
ResponsibilitiesThe Officer will:
- Research, develop, coordinate, and deliver training programs covering all aspects of fire protection and prevention, including public education and training for mining and exploration sites.
- Promote standardized, effective training for stakeholders, including schools, hospitals, elder care homes, detention centers, fire departments, community groups, organizations, and mining industry staff.
- Conduct fire prevention inspections of structures and facilities as directed by the Deputy Fire Marshal.
- Investigate incidents, file detailed reports on fires, and liaise with Nunavut Government officials, Community Councils, RCMP, Regional Health and Social Services Board, and other community agencies.
- Plan and promote public awareness of fire prevention procedures in workplaces, homes, and schools.
- Manage physical, mental, and environmental demands, such as climbing ladders, entering confined spaces, carrying equipment, and traveling in harsh climatic conditions, including deep snow, icy roads, and wet mud, as well as extensive remote travel by small aircraft.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this role are typically obtained through:
- Five (5) years’ experience in the fire service.
- A recognized National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certification or equivalent, such as:
- NFPA 1001 – Level 2, Fire Fighter Professional Qualification
- NFPA 1031 – Level 1, Fire Inspector
- NFPA 1033 – Fire Investigator or NFPA 921 – Fire and Explosion Investigator
- NFPA 1035 – Level 2, Fire and Life Safety Educator
- NFPA 1041 – Level 2, Fire Service Instructor
- A Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brake Certification or equivalent.
- Working toward or having achieved the following IFSAC certifications (considered assets):
- NFPA 1021 – Level 1, Fire Officer
- NFPA 1002 – Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications
- Fluency in two (2) or more of Nunavut's official languages (Inuktut, English, French) – an asset.
- Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut, and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment – an asset.
- Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered; applicants should apply if they possess equivalent years of education and/or experience.
- Highly Sensitive Position: A satisfactory Criminal Record Check and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check are required.
