About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Building System Technician II to join our dynamic Enterprise Facilities team in NL-St. John's.

The Enterprise Facilities team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by managing and maintaining the physical infrastructure and facilities of Canadian Blood Services. In this role, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the facility and grounds in accordance with internal policies and procedures and external regulatory requirements. You will maintain the building and grounds in good order and perform support functions for the Centre.

Formula for success

  • Monitor and respond to the operation of building systems (generator maintenance, general preventative maintenance and building upkeep) including all water treatment systems (water softener, hot water heating systems and cooling towers).
  • Maintain buildings and grounds to ensure safety, security, snow removal (on-call) and overseeing cleanliness of the building.
  • Life Safety Equipment Testing and Operating (sprinkler systems, fire suppression system, scheduling and coordinating repairs and maintenance).
  • Perform generalized departmental support functions and report back to Maintenance person as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required (EG - pick up and purchase of supplies, assist Maintenance in performing their duties, shadow contractors).

Desired education and skills

  • Post-secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution, preferably in Heating & Cooling or Electrical systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Up to 4 years' experience in operating computerized building system and related equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of computers, including use of Word and Excel, is required.
  • Good interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Fourth Class Stationary Engineer Certificate, Systems Maintenance Technician or equivalent, would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

What you can expect

  • Carries out after hours emergency response on-call duties on a rotational basis, one week on one week off, or as required by schedules.
  • This role works Monday - Friday  at the 7 Wicklow St, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador location.
  • A valid driver’s license and personal vehicle would be required.
  • Physical requirements:
    • 40% of total time is spent standing or walking.
    • You will be required to pull and push supplies, power equipment of approximately 500-600 pounds with the assistance of appropriate work aids as required.
    • You may be required to carry workloads of 35 – 45 pounds.

This position must meet the Trustworthiness and Reliability Verification requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and is subject to criminal records and employment verification checks.
