Overview

Role Overview :
We are seeking a highly skilled and adaptable CNC / Manual Machinist specializing in low-volume turning to join our team on a temp-to-perm basis. In this role, you will not just be a "button pusher" on a mass-production line. You will own the entire manufacturing process for small batches and one-off components. We will hand you a technical drawing and raw material;

you will be responsible for setting up the lathe, programming the path, selecting the correct tooling, and producing a high-quality finished part.

Our workshop utilizes versatile XYZ semi-CNC / manual turning machines. While there is a natural learning curve with any new workshop setup, an experienced turner with strong foundational knowledge of metals and cutting tools will adapt quickly to our practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take engineering drawings and raw stock materials to program, set up, and machine low-volume turned parts.
  • Operate, set up, and program XYZ semi-CNC and manual lathes.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, calculate optimal speeds and feeds, and perform manual lathe setups for low-volume or one-off prototype parts.
  • Interpret geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to inspect your own turned work and ensure parts meet strict precision standards.
  • Work with a wide variety of metals, adapting turning techniques based on how different materials react to cutting tools.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Proven experience in a jobbing shop, prototyping lab, toolroom, or low-volume turning environment.
  • Ability to read and fully interpret complex engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of manual turning combined with experience on conversational or semi-CNC controls like ProtoTRAK or XYZ ProTURN.
  • Deep understanding of cutting tool behavior across various metals during turning such as stainless steel, aluminium, brass, and alloys.
  • Self-motivated craftsman who can work with minimal supervision and solve machining challenges independently.
What We Offer
  • Hourly rate of £16.00 to £18.00 per hour - depending on experience.
  • An early finish every Friday at lunch time.
  • Clear path to a permanent contract following a successful probationary temporary period.
  • Initial & ongoing support during your initial onboarding to learn our specific machines and company practices
