Filtronic is a leader in advanced RF and microwave technology, designing and manufacturing high-performance solutions for the Space, Aerospace, Defence and Telecommunications sectors. The company is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to join the engineering team at its headquarters in Sedgefield. This role involves developing embedded software that powers sophisticated RF and communications systems as part of a multidisciplinary team spanning RF, FPGA, hardware and systems engineering.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop and debug embedded software for real-world RF applications on bare-metal and RTOS-based systems.
  • Develop embedded software in C/C++ for ARM-based microcontrollers.
  • Design software for bare-metal and real-time operating systems (including FreeRTOS and Zephyr).
  • Bring up new hardware and debug prototype boards using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and software debugging tools.
  • Develop robust communications between embedded devices using interfaces such as Ethernet, CAN, SPI, I²C, UART and RS422.
  • Design networking functionality including TCP/IP, REST APIs, SNMP and OpenAPI interfaces.
  • Collaborate with hardware, FPGA and systems engineers to integrate software with complex electronic systems.
  • Investigate and resolve software, networking and embedded system issues.
  • Contribute throughout the full product development lifecycle from concept through to manufacture.
Qualifications
  • Strong commercial experience developing embedded software in C/C++.
  • Experience with bare-metal systems and/or real-time operating systems.
  • Experience developing software for ARM Cortex-based microcontrollers.
  • Practical experience bringing up prototype hardware.
  • Knowledge of embedded communication protocols including Ethernet, CAN, SPI, I²C and UART.
  • Excellent debugging skills using both hardware and software tools.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent commercial experience.
  • Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:
    Zephyr RTOS or FreeRTOS, STM
    32 microcontrollers, embedded networking and TCP/IP, secure bootloaders and firmware update mechanisms, Python, MISRA C/C++, RF or microwave systems, defence, aerospace or space applications.
