This department promotional opportunity with the San Joaquin County Public Works - Solid Waste Division is to fill one full-time Cashier Clerk vacancy and to establish an eligible list which may be used to fill future vacancies. To qualify, candidates must be currently employed by the San Joaquin County Public Works Department and meet all eligibility requirements for promotional opportunities. TYPICAL DUTIES
  • Receives, disburses, and balances cash, checks, warrants, and other negotiable instruments; verifies identity of payees and amounts to be paid; issues receipts; makes change.
  • Reconciles cash and other negotiable instruments with receipts and other transaction records; prepares routine summaries of transactions.
  • Counts and sorts checks, warrants, documents and monies; makes routine arithmetic calculations; files receipts, vouchers and other documents according to established procedures.
  • Provides routine information to the public and staff; may communicate by telephone or radio, as required.
  • Operates a variety of standard office equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Two years of responsible clerical work, one year of which must have included the counting, receiving and disbursing of cash.
Substitution: One year of business training in an approved school or training program which included instruction in general office procedures, and either business mathematics, language mechanics, office machine operations or record keeping procedures may be substituted for six months of the required experience.
License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license, if required by the nature of the assignment.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic arithmetic; record keeping principles and techniques; filing principles and techniques; public relations techniques; basic cash handling procedures; basic language mechanics; general office procedures; basic computer and modern office automation technology and computer software programs relevant to department operations.

ABILITY

Make accurate arithmetic computations; handle and count money; follow detailed instructions; operate computers and related software; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; handle stressful situations and work well under pressure; code and sort items.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility-Frequent operation of a data entry device, repetitive motion, sitting for long periods, walking; occasional standing, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, climbing;
Lifting-Frequently 5 pounds or less; occasionally 5 to 30 pounds;
Visual-Constant good overall vision and reading/close-up work; frequent color perception and use of eye/hand coordination; occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision;
Hearing/Talking-Frequent hearing of normal speech, hearing/talking on the telephone, talking in person;
Emotional/Psychological-Frequent decision making, concentration, and public contact;
Special Requirements-Some assignments may require working weekends, nights, and/or occasional overtime;
Environmental-Depending upon assignment, may be frequently exposed to cold/heat, dirt, dust, fumes, and varied weather conditions.
