Description

Under the direction of the assigned manager, provide appropriate and quality instructional, social, and physical activities for children within the Center;
Plan, organize, and implement a developmentally appropriate program; and ensure a safe and pleasant learning environment for children.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is a specialized single level support classification allocated only to the Child Development Center. The Early Childhood Education Teacher is responsible for planning the instructional, social, and physical activities for children within the Center.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Develop, plan and implement developmentally appropriate experiences that are engaging, playful, build on what children know and understand, and can be individualized to accommodate different skill levels and learning styles.
  • Provide for the care, safety, health, and nutrition of children by maintaining supervision at all times to ensure a safe environment; collaborate with the teaching team in coordination and implementation of emergency drills; cleaning and sanitizing the classroom/materials, dispensation of authorized medications, provide food service and other activities.
  • Ensure that the Center is well maintained and orderly and that its appearance is clean, cheerful, safe and appropriate for children of all age groups; and report repair and maintenance needs to appropriate staff.
  • Interact with children individually to encourage self-expression and language development; observe and re‑direct behavior according to approved procedures. Refer to appropriate resources if needed.
  • Answer questions, and provide appropriate examples, emotional support, friendly attitude, and general guidance to the children.
  • Monitor, assess, and report progress of children's performance and behavior; identify and implement strategies to prevent and/or address children's challenging behaviors and implement strategies to help children resolve conflict.
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties, such as maintaining files, entering data, using computers and maintaining center records.
  • Maintain children's documentation and portfolios to perform assessments; complete assessments and conduct parent conferences to discuss children's growth and development.
  • Provide a supportive learning environment for children's first and dual language acquisition, development and learning.
  • Communicate and collaborate in partnership with families in a culturally appropriate and responsive manner to support young children's development.
  • Work collaboratively with instructors/programs;
    Serve as a resource for student teachers and volunteers in the Center by modeling appropriate engagement and educational techniques answer questions as specifically and detailed as possible; refer students to other staff as appropriate.
  • Provide content and material to conduct parent education meetings based upon standards. Respond to requests from parents.
  • Provide support and input for the Center's program self‑evaluation, training plan, and center goals.
  • Participate in professional growth, or work‑related training activities necessary for permit renewal.
  • Participate in District and campus related activities as assigned.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Knowledge of:

    • Basic operations and services of a child development center.
    • General principles, techniques, theories, concepts, and practices of early childhood education and child development including proper redirection and care.
    • Multiple developmental, cultural, biological and environmental factors that affect behavior and children's development and learning.
    • Child guidance principles and practices.
    • Basic instructional methods and techniques.
    • Basic computer skills including spreadsheets, databases, and information searches.
    • Safety practices as applied to classroom and playground activities.
    • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations governing child care and development centers.

    Ability to:

    • Demonstrate a willingness and enthusiasm when working within the Child Development Center;
