Bathurst Resources is New Zealand’s largest coal‑specialist mining company. We produce over 2.2 million tonnes of coal each year and employ over 550 people. About 80 percent of our production is used for steelmaking, with one third supplied to local Kiwi steel producers. Our high‑quality thermal‑grade coal fuels drive the engines of many iconic food and dairy businesses.
The Stockton Opencast Mine is located close to the coast on a plateau in the Buller coalfield, 35 km north of Westport. It is one of New Zealand’s largest mines with a long history of coal production and produces high‑value coal for export to the world’s leading steel makers.
The RoleReporting to the Health Safety and Training (HST) Manager, the Health and Safety Advisor will support the HSEC HST Manager and Mine Manager to ensure all mining and related activities comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act and Mining and Quarrying Operations Regulations. The role also coordinates the continuous improvement of our Health and Safety Management System, promotes site health and safety activities, processes, education, and training, and supports the achievement of a Zero Harm Culture at Stockton Mine.
The position evaluates and reports on the effectiveness of site occupational health and safety activities, monitors safe handling of materials and substances, manages OHS system standards and procedures, and monitors and evaluates mine contractors and their obligations to comply with statutory and company requirements.
To Be Successful InThe Role You Will Have
- New Zealand Working Rights are essential.
- A tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety or extensive role experience in Health and Safety.
- Certification in Incident Investigation and Occupational First Aid.
- Thorough understanding and proven application of OHS Legislation.
- Experience in Risk Management Practice.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong commitment to safety.

- Transport to and from work (from the Westport area).
