Job Description & How to Apply Below

Catalyst would like to build a pool of trained volunteer Community Interpreters who will support meetings and sessions with people for whom English is a barrier to communication. They may assist both individuals and community organisations/charities that need an interpreter for a meeting.

Being a volunteer Community Interpreter is not a regular commitment, but means being available for times when an interpreter in your language is needed. It is understood that volunteers will not be always available, which is why we are looking to recruit and train several volunteers in a range of languages, to help provide as much support as possible.

Volunteers are required to complete the Stockton on Tees Borough Council, Learning and Skills, Community Interpreters training course before they start supporting individuals.

To apply for this role, please complete the application form here:

  • Provide interpreting services for individuals during meetings, sessions or group activities as needed. This may be at the premises, such as offices of organisations, at the Catalyst offices in central Stockton or at a community venue. Interpreting will not take place in individuals’ homes unless accompanied by a professional from an organisation.
  • Assist individuals to complete paperwork or online forms/applications as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality throughout the service (making the service user aware information will be shared with the Volunteer Coordinator where necessary.
  • Volunteers will be carrying out a key role, possibly dealing with sensitive issues, so a professional and supportive attitude is essential. Volunteers will be offered full support and will be given guidance on when and how to refer individuals to more specialist support and services.
  • A friendly, respectful and non-judgemental attitude towards service users and their needs.
  • An appropriate level of English skills, both spoken and written.
  • An understanding of challenges and barriers that service users may face would be useful, but not essential.
  • Able to support, encourage and enable others to fulfil tasks and activities.
  • Demonstrated good listening and personal skills.
  • Reliable, trustworthy and proactive.
  • Volunteers are required to complete the Stockton on Tees Borough Council, Learning and Skills, Community Interpreters training course before they start supporting individuals.
  • This opportunity is not a regular commitment, but volunteers are expected to be available on an occasional basis as and when individuals require support in their language.
  • Volunteers are asked to commit to being available as a Community Interpreter for at least six months.
