Based across two sites – Royal Stoke in Stoke‑on‑Trent and County Hospital in Stafford – we serve around three million people and are highly regarded for our facilities, teaching, research and innovation. We are the specialist centre for major trauma in the North Midlands and North Wales.
This is a unique opportunity to apply for the Advanced Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Fellow position. In conjunction with consultant colleagues the post holder will provide a comprehensive complex and non‑complex hand and wrist service to UHNM.
Applicants should have dedicated training in hand and wrist surgery and be able to work at senior level in elective and trauma, complex and non‑complex cases. The North Midlands Hand Centre offers a high surgical volume with a broad case mix, exposure to routine trauma, elective hand surgery, complex wrist arthroplasty, arthroscopy, peripheral nerve reconstruction, and advanced tendon and ligament procedures.
Fellows will work with specialist hand therapists, radiologists and multidisciplinary teams, and will have ample opportunities for research, audit and teaching within an academic environment.
- See new patient referrals into the hand and wrist service to generate an independent caseload for inpatient treatment.
- Review other consultant patients, follow up, discharge to primary care or facilitate ongoing care in accordance with local guidance.
- Provide leadership and skill in hand and wrist surgery.
- Deliver specialist services in management of hand and wrist trauma and assist in management of major trauma patients.
- Manage and be responsible for the continuing care of patients with hand and wrist problems in partnership with current hand and wrist surgeons.
- Provide second opinions for concerned patients at the request of consultant colleagues.
- Lead ward management by active participation and example.
- Liaise with other surgeons regarding annual leave and study leave to ensure continued service delivery.
- Work across both our sites at Royal Stoke and County Hospital.
- MBBS or equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics)
- Completed SpR level training in Trauma and Orthopaedics
- Hand Diploma – BSSH/Eur
- CCST (Completion Certificate of Training)
- Proven ability to care for acutely injured patients
- Knowledge of basic pre‑ and post‑operative management for elective surgical patients
- Participation in audit activities
- Understanding and application of clinical care standards
- Experience in hand and wrist sub‑specialities
- Evidence of publication
- Team‑working ability
- Highly motivated
- Organising and prioritising busy workloads effectively
- Effective communication with patients, senior medical staff and other health professionals
