Are you an engaging Maths educator looking for a teaching role where your work genuinely transforms young lives? Do you want to support young learners in custody on their rehabilitation journey by giving them the core numeracy skills needed for employment, further education, and everyday life?
We are recruiting for an inspiring Functional Skills Maths Tutor to join the education team at a HMYOI. In this deeply rewarding role, you will deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths qualifications from Entry Level 1 through to Level
2. Working with small class sizes (up to 12 learners), you will play a vital role in building confidence, raising numeracy standards, and helping young people build brighter futures.
- Engaging Delivery:
Plan and deliver interactive, inclusive Functional Skills Maths lessons tailored to small groups of young learners with varied educational backgrounds and learning needs. - Assessment & Tracking:
Conduct initial assessments using BKSB diagnostic tools to establish starting points, construct Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), and monitor continuous student progression. - Adaptive Teaching:
Utilize innovative, practical, and digital resources to make maths accessible, relevant, and enjoyable for all learners. - Exam Preparation:
Prepare young learners for formal City & Guilds assessments and qualifications, celebrating their achievements and personal growth. - Enrichment &
Collaboration:
Actively promote numeracy, literacy, and reading for pleasure across the establishment while collaborating with prison staff, support practitioners, and employability teams.
- Subject Expertise: A Level 3 qualification in Mathematics.
- Teaching
Qualifications:
A Level 5 teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS, or equivalent) is preferred. No Level 5 qualification? Candidates with relevant delivery experience who are willing to work towards a Level 5 qualification are fully encouraged to apply. - Teaching
Experience:
Proven track record of delivering Functional Skills Maths qualifications with strong classroom management and lesson planning capability. - Core Competencies:
Excellent administrative capability (ILPs, registers, assessment logs), strong communication skills, and the resilience to teach in a secure youth environment. - Desirable Criteria:
Experience with in youth justice, prison education, FE, or adult learning settings, familiarity with BKSB diagnostics, knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF), or an IQA qualification.
