Mechanical Project Engineer – Staff – Consultancy – Salary + Benefits – Greater Manchester

You will plan, coordinate, and execute mechanical engineering projects from concept through to completion, ensuring technical excellence, compliance with safety and quality standards, and timely delivery within budget. The Mechanical Project Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams and external vendors to deliver successful outcomes for capital and maintenance projects.

The role would involve travel to site on average once per month. This could include as far as the south coast of England to the highlands of Scotland.

Duties:

* Develop project scopes, specifications, and budgets for mechanical systems and equipment.

* Lead or support the design and engineering of mechanical components including piping, vessels, pumps, heat exchangers and structural supports.

* Manage timelines, cost estimates, and procurement plans for assigned projects feeding into the project manager.

* Liaise with internal departments (Process, EC&I, Mechanical & Piping) and external contractors to ensure alignment and compliance.

* Perform engineering calculations, risk assessments, and technical reviews.

* Prepare and manage project documentation including drawings, datasheets, installation procedures, and commissioning plans.

* Support installation, commissioning, and validation (IQ/OQ/PQ as applicable).

* Ensure adherence to relevant standards and regulations (e.g., ASME, PED, ISO, UKCA marking).

* Monitor contractor performance and ensure quality and safety compliance on site.

* Identify and implement opportunities for process improvement and cost reduction.

* Support the handover of assets to operations and maintenance teams.

Qualifications &

Experience:

* Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline.

* Proven experience managing small to medium capital projects in a manufacturing, process, or industrial environment.

* Knowledge of piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), process flow diagrams (PFDs), and mechanical layout drawings
