Hitachi Energy is seeking a Senior Commissioning Engineer to provide commissioning expertise across a portfolio of transmission, distribution, substation, and renewable energy projects throughout the UK. This is a predominantly remote role, with travel typically less than 15%, offering a rare opportunity to remain at the forefront of major infrastructure projects without being permanently site-based.
Working closely with Project Managers and commissioning teams, you will act as the commissioning subject matter expert, supporting projects from tender stage through to energisation and handover. You'll play a key role in shaping commissioning strategies, developing documentation, supporting project planning activities, and ensuring successful project delivery across multiple projects simultaneously.
Location: UK (Remote with occasional travel to project sites and Hitachi Energy offices as required)
How You'll Make an Impact
- Provide commissioning expertise throughout tendering, planning, delivery, and project close-out phases.
- Develop commissioning strategies, programmes, methodologies, and testing sequences.
- Support tender reviews, commissioning estimates, resource planning, and project scheduling activities.
- Review, develop, and approve commissioning procedures, test plans, and technical documentation.
- Act as the commissioning subject matter expert across multiple projects.
- Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), commissioning reviews, and customer meetings.
- Conduct periodic site visits to review progress, identify risks, and provide technical guidance.
- Work closely with Project Managers to manage commissioning risks, technical issues, claims, and successful project delivery.
- Review commissioning documentation completed by internal teams and external partners.
- Support commissioning activities from project award through to energisation and handover.
Your Background
- Proven commissioning experience within electrical infrastructure, substations, utilities, renewable energy, or power transmission and distribution projects.
- Strong understanding of commissioning processes, testing methodologies, project delivery, and energisation activities.
- Experience developing, reviewing, or approving commissioning documentation and test procedures.
- Knowledge of commissioning planning, resource allocation, sequencing, and project scheduling.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities across multiple projects.
Preferred experience:
- High Voltage commissioning experience, ideally within 132kV to 400kV environments.
- Substation commissioning experience.
- Transmission & Distribution project experience.
- Medium Voltage commissioning experience.
- Experience supporting FATs and commissioning readiness activities.
Why Join Hitachi Energy?
- Predominantly remote role with less than 15% travel.
- Opportunity to work on critical infrastructure supporting the UK's energy transition.
- Stay technically involved without spending most of your time on site.
- Support major transmission, distribution, renewable energy, and substation projects across the UK.
- Private medical insurance with the option to add family members.
