Company Description

We’re Together. For over 50 years, we’ve helped thousands of people, businesses and professionals unlock their property ambitions with our common-sense approach to mortgages and secured loans.

We take the time to understand our customers and our door is always open, so we can often help when other lenders can’t or won’t. Based in Cheadle, Cheshire, our 900 colleagues help our customers throughout the UK, backed by the power of a £7 billion loan book.

As a High Net Worth Underwriter, we are looking for someone who is capable of unpicking complex financial webs to prove a customer can afford their debt. Allowing you to accurately underwrite, mandate and complete mortgage and secured loan applications for High Net Worth individuals as part of our Premier Service. Focusing on service delivery by following group lending criteria, policies and procedures, you will proactively manage customer and broker relationships whilst delivering a seamless level of service to increase future business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret full statutory accounts (Ltd/LLP), specifically tracking how money moves between entities via dividends, director loans, and management charges
  • Reconstruct net income from diverse streams (trading profits, vesting, and carried interest) and assessing its long-term sustainability through multi-year trend analysis and stress testing
  • Have working knowledge of UK personal and corporate tax (S455, SA302s, and dividend vs. salary) to understand how tax planning impacts actual cash flow
  • Be familiar with trusts, holding companies, and offshore vehicles is essential to identify who truly controls the wealth and the feasibility of repatriating funds
  • Navigate FCA MCOB rules regarding HNW exemptions and modified affordability
  • Be able to accurately triage clients against HNW definitions (£300k+ income / £3m+ net assets) and distinguish between income-based underwriting and Asset-Based Lending (ABL)
  • Understand how various assets (from private equity to fine art) generate liquidity or future "exit events"
  • Be able to justify policy exceptions and identify "early warning signals" within a client’s portfolio, such as concentration risk or high leverage
Essential Qualifications
  • Exposure to HNW/Private Banking underwriting or specialist lending with modified affordability
  • Familiarity with KYC/AML/PEP nuances for HNW (complex ownership, source of wealth/source of funds checks)
  • Demonstrable track record assessing dividend/loan account income and reading statutory accounts
  • Commercial pragmatism with control: balances risk with customer outcome; knows when to say no but starts with a desire to see how we can structure a deal within appetite
  • Can‑do, hands‑on. Willing to “roll sleeves up” in a fast‑paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Communicates clearly and confidently, adapting style for brokers, valuers, solicitors, senior colleagues and HNW customers
Desirable Qualifications
  • Cases with cross‑border income/assets and FX conversion to GBP
  • Experience interacting with accountants/tax advisers and challenging assumptions
