Overview

The UHNM GI Physiology unit is a small team providing upper and lower gastrointestinal investigations, including high‑resolution manometry, 24‑hour pH and impedance monitoring, hydrogen breath testing, anorectal manometry, and a comprehensive biofeedback therapy service.

• Conduct physiological measurement investigations: oesophageal manometry, oesophageal pH impedance studies, hydrogen and methane breath testing, anorectal physiology, and wireless pH monitoring.
• Support the provision of comprehensive bowel behavioural therapy within the pelvic floor multidisciplinary team, including patient education sessions, advice and medication review, counselling, and computer‑aided biofeedback techniques.
• Provide analysis and high‑quality diagnostic reports of investigations and assess the appropriateness of tests.
• Report test results to multidisciplinary teams and contribute to discussions on patient management and care pathways.
• Participate in MDT meetings, including the Pelvic Floor MDT twice monthly and the Upper Benign MDT once a month.
• Provide diagnostic testing to hospitals outside the Trust.

• Qualified in GI Physiology as a Clinical Scientist/GI Physiologist.
• Competent and qualified, or at the end of training such as STP, as a registered Clinical Scientist in GI Physiology with HCPC or as an Independent Practitioner by the Association of GI Physiologists and registered with AHCS.
