Caregiver, Home Care, Direct Support Professional/ Direct Care
We are a family-run care provider in Torbay, and we are building a small team around a new piece of person-centred work. If you want to support people with physical disabilities and mental health needs to get more out of their own lives, this is a genuinely good job to have.
This role is open to female applicants only. That is a genuine occupational requirement under Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010: the people being supported need personal care, and have asked for female workers.
What you would be doingSupporting people in their own homes and out in the community, working to their care plan, so that they keep as much control over their own lives as possible. Day to day that means:
- Building independence, rather than doing things for people who can do them themselves
- Getting out to community activities and events, and helping someone get past whatever is stopping them
- Personal care: washing, dressing, bathing and toileting, done at the person’s pace
- Prompting, monitoring or administering medication, and recording it properly
- Preparing and cooking meals, cleaning, shopping and help with paying bills
- Going with people to outings, hospital appointments and GP appointments
- Keeping accurate records, and reporting any change or concern promptly
- Working with family and friends who care unpaid, because they usually know the person best
- Kind, reliable and compassionate. That matters more here than experience
- Full-time availability. The rota is business-led and includes some evenings and weekends
- A driving licence and your own car
- The judgement to protect someone’s dignity and privacy, and to act promptly if you think they are at risk of neglect or abuse
- £12.91 an hour
- Fully funded training, including all NVQ levels, and a career path if you want one
- A free company iPhone
- Fuel card, available on request
- Mileage allowance
- Paid holidays
- Refer a friend and earn up to £250
- Induction training covering health and safety, first aid, and moving and handling, with further specific training offered
- Supervision, appraisal and ongoing development, not just a first week and good luck
You would report to the Senior Care Worker and the Deputy Manager. If you have not done care work before, most of our applicants have not either. Ring and ask what a week actually looks like — an informal chat is genuinely fine.
