Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, motivated and enthusiastic Midwife to join the UHNM Maternity Team as the Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) Screening Coordinator Midwife. This is a pivotal leadership role within Maternity Services, providing expert oversight and operational management of the NHS Antenatal and Newborn Screening Programmes. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe, effective and timely delivery of screening pathways, whilst maintaining compliance with national standards and contributing to the ongoing development of high-quality maternity care.
As the ANNB Screening Coordinator, you will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues across maternity, neonatal, fetal medicine, laboratory and community services to ensure women and babies receive equitable access to screening services and appropriate follow-up care. The role combines clinical expertise, leadership, governance and workforce management, making it an excellent opportunity for an experienced midwife with a passion for quality, safety and service improvement.
duties of the job
- Lead and coordinate the delivery of all NHS Antenatal and Newborn Screening Programmes.
- Act as the expert resource for screening pathways, standards and national guidance.
- Monitor and report on screening performance, quality indicators and compliance with national standards.
- Lead investigations relating to screening incidents, complaints and patient safety concerns.
- Manage and develop the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Team, including rota management, sickness absence, recruitment and annual PDRs.
- Ensure staff maintain appropriate screening competencies and mandatory training requirements.
- Lead quality assurance activity and implement service improvements in response to local and national recommendations.
- Work collaboratively with NHS England, regional screening teams and Trust colleagues to improve outcomes for women, babies and families.
- Significant post-registration midwifery experience.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
- Experience of managing teams and supporting staff development.
- A sound understanding of clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
- Knowledge of Antenatal and Newborn Screening Programmes and national maternity standards.
- The ability to analyse complex information, manage risk and drive service improvements.

responsibilities
The Antenatal and Newborn Screening (ANNB) Coordinator Midwife is responsible for leading, coordinating and developing the Trust's Antenatal and Newborn Screening Programmes, ensuring compliance with NHS England screening standards and national guidance. The post holder will provide expert clinical leadership, quality assurance and operational oversight across all screening pathways to ensure women, babies and families receive safe, effective and timely care.
The successful candidate will lead the screening team, providing day-to-day management including workforce planning, rota management, sickness absence management, recruitment, staff development and completion of annual Performance Development Reviews (PDRs). They will monitor screening performance, manage risks and incidents, oversee failsafe processes, and ensure robust governance arrangements are in place to maintain patient safety and regulatory compliance. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, the post holder will coordinate service improvement initiatives, support staff education and competency assessment, analyse complex performance data and act as the specialist resource for all aspects of antenatal and newborn screening.
