Trades ​/ Skilled Labor Operator, Heavy Equipment Operator

Typical equipment A broad range of heavy equipment, potentially including excavator, dozer, motor grader, wheel or track loader, articulated or off-road haul truck, compactor, skid steer, and specialty equipment, based on verified competency and authorization.

Important Assignment to a level does not automatically authorize operation of every listed machine. Employees may operate only equipment for which they have been trained, evaluated, and authorized.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform complex, high-risk, or precision operating assignments, including fine grading, deep excavation, trench work, utility support, slope work, mass earthmoving, and work in congested areas, as qualified and assigned.

Interpret site plans, grade stakes, elevations, cut sheets, profiles, and machine-control information needed to complete assigned work accurately.

Plan efficient equipment movements and work sequences in coordination with the foreman or superintendent, accounting for trucking, material flow, crew access, weather, soil, and changing field conditions.

Recognize developing production, grade, utility, equipment, or safety issues and communicate recommended corrective action before work is affected.

Operate multiple machines as project needs change and assist supervision in matching equipment capabilities to the work.

Coach Operator 1 and Operator 2 employees on safe techniques, equipment care, grade control, and efficient operation when directed.

Support equipment demonstrations or competency observations without independently authorizing employees unless formally designated by management.

Complete a pre-operation inspection at the beginning of the shift; document and promptly report damage, defects, leaks, unusual sounds, or unsafe conditions.

Operate assigned equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidance, site plans, company procedures, and the direction of the foreman or superintendent.

Maintain awareness of workers, utilities, structures, changing ground conditions, traffic, and other equipment within the work zone.

Follow hand signals, spotter instructions, traffic-control measures, excavation requirements, and established site communication practices.

Perform routine operator care, including cleaning the cab and equipment, checking fluid levels, and fueling or greasing equipment when authorized and trained.

Maintain daily equipment reports, inspection forms, production records, and other required jobsite documentation accurately and on time.

Participate in safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and pre-task planning; stop work and notify supervision when an unsafe condition is observed.

Assist with general site activities and ground work when equipment operation is not required.

Protect company equipment, tools, materials, and the public; report incidents, injuries, utility strikes, and property damage immediately.

Perform other related duties as assigned based on project and operational needs.

Substantial demonstrated experience operating multiple types of heavy equipment in heavy civil construction.

Advanced working knowledge of grading, excavation, trenching, utilities, material placement, compaction, slopes, and production sequencing.

Demonstrated ability to perform precision work using plans, grade stakes, elevations, and applicable machine-control systems.

Ability to assess changing field conditions, anticipate operational conflicts, and communicate practical solutions.

Ability to coach less-experienced operators professionally and reinforce safe, consistent work practices.

Valid driver’s license is preferred and may be required depending on equipment and job assignment.

Must demonstrate competency on each assigned machine and complete company-required training.
