Required Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
- Two (2) years of full-time experience in Communications, Media Relations, or Marketing/Promotions.
- Experience with general graphic design principles, typography, color theory, and production processes for print and digital media.
- Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
- Experience with Athletic communications, sports information, and/or Sports Journalism.
- Experience with a Division I Athletic Program or a professional sports organization.
- Experience with statistical software and/or multimedia platforms.
- Experience in athletic game day operations related to PR, Communications, and/or Media.
The Assistant Director for Communications supports the Stony Brook University Athletics Department’s mission by managing the overall communication, branding, and multimedia efforts of the athletic department. The Assistant will be responsible for promoting athletic achievements, managing game day operations, and developing multimedia content to enhance the visibility of Stony Brook University’s athletic programs. They will work with local, regional, and national media, as well as internal departments, to support Athletics’s goals.
Digitaland Multi-Media Content
- Brand Identity:
Create and maintain the graphic brand identity for Athletics, ensuring alignment with University brand guidelines. - Graphic Templates:
Develop and design department graphic templates for use by communications staff to support revenue, recruiting, and recognition efforts. - Collaboration:
Work closely with the Office of Strategic Communications on graphic design, video creation, and documentation throughout the year. - Digital Asset Management:
Convert video and graphic creatives onto the University’s Digital Asset Management software system. - Video Initiatives:
Execute the department’s video initiatives, including production and management. - Student Interns:
Manage the hiring, training, and education of student interns for game day and daily workflow within the Athletic Communication department.
- Gameday Strategy:
Execute all gameday graphic, video, and digital strategies in support of 18 intercollegiate sports. - Personnel Management:
Train and mentor Athletic student assistants, interns, and volunteers. - Media Relations:
Manage courtside and press box personnel, ensure accurate official statistics, coordinate media access and interviews, prepare game programs and notes, and create post‑game releases.
- Media Guides and Brochures:
Create, prepare, produce, and distribute media guides, recruiting brochures, and schedule cards for assigned sports programs. - Postseason Guides:
Write, design, and produce postseason guides for teams participating in playoffs. - Fundraising Publications:
Collaborate with External Services staff to produce fundraising reports and newsletters.
- Primary Contact:
Serve as the primary media contact for assigned intercollegiate programs. - Media Relations:
Cultivate relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets, manage media requests, and ensure timely and accurate reporting of athletic events and news. - Feature Stories:
Research and write feature stories about student-athletes and department news for internal and external publication.
- Creative Design:
Provide creative design support for department functions and initiatives, including posters, flyers, brochures, and invitations. - Writing:
Write articles for various department and university publications distributed to the university community, alumni, and external media outlets.
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. In addition to the employee’s base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
