POSITION SUMMARY:Endoscopy scrub technologists are members of the Endoscopy team who assist in endoscopic procedures under the supervision of the Endoscopists and registered nurses. The technologists provide and assist in the care, maintenance, and disinfection of endoscopes, perform surgical scrub assistance and other processing of supplies and equipment in Central Supply and Endoscopy. They prepare the Endoscopy suite by setting up instruments, supplies, solutions and equipment, check these items to assure proper functioning, assist in transporting and positioning patients, help with the care of specimens, proper labeling, and follow hospital policy.
They maintain a professional profile, promote cooperation, a positive attitude and assist in creating a safe environment for both patients and staff. They are responsible for knowing and adhering to established hospital policies and procedures, including all aspects of safety.
- Demonstrates the ability to plan work effectively.
- Addresses the special needs of each age group served.
- Makes accommodations for the hearing impaired, physically challenged or those with language barriers.
- Implements physicians' orders as delegated and within the scope of practice.
- Keeps RN informed regarding problems and needs.
- Assists the registered nurse in assessing instrumentation needs and identifying potential problems.
- Assists in planning instrumentation to achieve patient goals.
- Organizes self and supplies in an efficient manner by checking the endoscopist's preference card for all the supplies needed.
- Sets up the Endoscopy Room.
- Checks all labels of any solutions or drugs that are placed on the back table with the circulating nurse.
- Always reports to the RN any observations, complaints and concerns or other pertinent information relating to patient condition.
- Demonstrates an awareness of patient needs for preventive safety measures and follows through appropriately, i.e., side rails are up at all times when patient is on stretcher.
- Reports all unusual occurrences and assists in initiating occurrence reports.
- Administers medications safely and within the scope of practice and established protocols.
- Insures the use of safety precautions; i.e., side rails, availability of call bells, beds in low position.
- Initiates and/or assists in an emergency code, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge and use of mechanical aids.
- Employs good body mechanics for self and patients.
- Prepares the room with appropriate instruments.
- Ability to scrub on all endoscopy cases.
- On‑Call including weekends and holidays.
- Completion of a program for Surgical Technology.
- Surgical Technologist Certification (CST).
- Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association required.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Recent Surgical Tech experience.
- Standing, walking 90% of the time.
- Lifting patients with assistance.
- Pushing heavy objects.
As part of employment at Southampton Hospital, there may be occasions when travel to other locations is needed to support operational needs.
