Position Summary
At Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, our Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Incumbents provide care supporting to and restorative of health and well-being, while adhering to a medical regimen.
Responsibilities- Assess the patient's condition and nursing needs; coordinate nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in the treatment effort to relate and integrate the nursing regimen with the treatment plan for patients.
- Develop a written individualized care plan which includes teaching needs and discharge planning.
- Administer direct care when professional nursing skills and judgment are needed.
- Administer medication.
- Practice infection control and participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment.
- Assume responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care to all assigned patients. Communicate changes in patient's condition and questions regarding patient care to Charge RN/Clinician.
- Develop and maintain current written plan of care for assigned patients. Set priorities to meet the patient's needs. Set patient goals and priorities with the patient and/or family.
- Provide document evidence in the medical record of patient/family teaching and their responses and understanding of the teaching. Ensure that patient education and instructions are consistent with that of the physician or designee.
- Communicate and work effectively with other staff and other departments.
- Participate in unit or hospital-based quality assurance activities or committees to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession at SBSH.
- Assist with Breast Cancer biopsies and patient care.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Possession of or eligibility for a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State.
- Basic Life Support ("BLS") certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support ("ACLS") certification required.
- Conscious Sedation Competency certification required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire.
- Telemetry and Critical Care, Cardiac Rhythm monitoring knowledge required.
- Current experience in Radiology.
- Bachelor of Science in nursing degree preferred. (Under New York State Education Law § 6905 (commonly referred to as the BSN in 10), all Registered Nurses licensed on or after December 19, 2017, must obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree within 10 years of their initial RN licensure to maintain their ability to practice in the State of New York.

- Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods, especially during emergencies.
- Ability to assist with patient transfers, repositioning and physical interventions, if needed.
- Lifting and/or transferring patients, including those who may be physically aggressive or uncooperative, with the use of appropriate safety techniques and equipment.
- Handling equipment and supplies needed for emergency care.
- Reacting quickly to situations involving physical restraint, patient agitation, or aggression.
- Proving physical support in restraining or de‑escalating patients if necessary.
- Ability to use medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision.
- Performing tasks such as documenting patient information, administering injections, or manipulating medical equipment.
- Ability to maintain physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends.
- Capacity to manage high‑stress situations with clear decision‑making and physical capacity.
- Ability to manage the emotional and physical challenges that come with caring for patients who may be agitated or experiencing mental health crises.
- Must be able to respond quickly and take rapid action, including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize patient in a crisis situation.
