Position SummaryAt Stony Brook Medicine, Locksmiths install, maintain, and repair locks and keys and other door or gate hardware, compile and maintain related records, and periodically perform maintenance tasks to assist other maintenance force personnel.
Responsibilities- Repair locks that are jammed or otherwise inoperative.
- Use tools to remove locking mechanisms from doors, gates, cabinets, etc.
- Open locks and remove defective parts or debris causing malfunction.
- Insert new parts into lock mechanisms.
- Adjust tumblers and levers as necessary.
- Manufacture keys to fit repaired locks.
- Install and maintain the lock and key system in a state facility.
- Install new locks in doors, windows, cabinets, etc. using a variety of small hand tools and following manufacturers' instructions.
- Periodically set lock cylinders and change combinations on locks.
- Compute changes in lock combinations and key changes to avoid duplication and record changes.
- Maintain locks by disassembling them, cleaning, oiling, and replacing parts and, as necessary, manufacturing parts such as screws and springs.
- Open locks where keys are not available or locks are jammed.
- Make new and duplicate keys as necessary.
- Keep extra keys for locks in a secure area.
- Estimate materials needed for lock and key system.
- Perform carpentry tasks related to lock and key system.
- Establish and maintain an extensive record system to avoid key and lock duplication and insure the required security of the facility and its contents.
- Record placement of locks, lock combinations, and number of keys fitting each lock; adjust records to reflect changes.
- Record information indicating person to whom keys and/or locks are issued.
- Good knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the locksmith trade.
- Working knowledge of the mathematics needed to determine key changes, changes in lock combinations, and the setting of various master keys.
- Working knowledge of facility security procedures concerning the issuance of keys and locks.
- Ability to plan and lay out locksmith work.
- Ability to read, interpret, and work from plans, diagrams, and specifications.
- Ability to use tools, machines, equipment, and materials of the locksmith trade.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform work requiring precision and attention to detail.
- Ability to organize records.
- Ability to estimate labor and material requirements of locksmith work.
- Ability to supervise and train others in the locksmith trade as required.
Required
:
Four years of full‑time experience in locksmithing under a skilled journey‑level locksmith providing training equivalent to an apprenticeship. Apprenticeship training or completion of technical courses in locksmithing may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred
:
Experience working in a hospital and/or healthcare setting. Valid and current NY driver license.

- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

- All hospital positions may be subject to changes in pay days and shifts as necessary.
- This position may require wearing respiratory protection, which may prohibit wearing facial hair.
- This function/position may be designated as “essential.” In an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at work or report to protect, recover, and continue operations.

PayRange
The salary range for this position is $50,425 per year. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Annual supplemental pay may include location pay ($4,000) for CSEA & PEF full‑time positions. Total compensation includes generous leave, health plans, and a state pension.
