Responsibilities
- Provide target costs for all new and existing vehicle projects using a data‑driven approach.
- Conduct competitor benchmarking studies.
- Participate in Tear‑Down studies and costing exercises on key commodities or components.
- Create ‘Should Costs’ for all responsible products for piece and tooling to support cost‑target setting activities.
- Support engineering to refine designs with more cost‑effective manufacturing processes.
- Evaluate ‘Should Cost’ against quotes to identify differences between targets and quotations.
- Assist procurement with technical challenges when discussing quotes with vendors.
- Maintain data accuracy during product development and revise ‘Should Cost’ in line with change and maturity.
- Set and achieve vehicle material and investment cost targets as part of the Cost Engineering team.
- Provide detailed ‘Should Costs’ to the wider business, influencing technical solutions and design to achieve profitable growth.
- Proven experience in cost engineering.
- Strong IT skills, especially Microsoft Office; advanced Excel skills are advantageous.
- Background in quality engineering or manufacturing engineering.
- Broad engineering and manufacturing knowledge, including component design.
- Solid understanding of vehicle architecture and its systems.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to use CAD reviewer software (Siemens Teamcenter / VIS Mockup).
- Capability to read technical drawings.
- Strong financial acumen.
- Teamwork mindset and willingness to learn and apply new knowledge.
- In‑depth manufacturing knowledge of how parts are manufactured, finished, and the process capability for each step.
- Knowledge of TcPCM piece/tooling system and Schmale tooling system.
- Previous cost‑engineering experience or equivalent.
- Understanding of a cost structure (QAF – Quotation Analysis Form).
- Technical and commercial awareness of bottom‑up costing.
- Quality engineering experience: PPAP, TVM, or cost‑reduction engineering.
- Product design and PPAP understanding of all elements.
- Formal apprenticeship in a relevant manufacturing sector (sheet metal, fabrication, machining, electronics, etc.).
- City & Guilds, GNVQ, or HNC (or equivalent).
- Engineering degree BSc/MSc or BEng/MEng (preferred).
- Exceptional numerical, analytical, and logical skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
The Cost Engineering team is responsible for setting and achieving vehicle material and investment cost targets, providing detailed ‘should costs’ to influence technical solutions and design for profitable growth.
