ROLE

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a valued member of the interdisciplinary team within the department and organization. They are responsible for the coordination and delivery of quality patient care by assessing and identifying patient needs, implementing and monitoring the patients’ medical plan, and following HPHA policies and procedures. Additionally, the Registered Nurse must follow nursing processes within the profession’s and licensures scope of practice.

They will provide education, advice and support to patients and family members.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(S)

  • Current Registration and Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
  • Operating Room Nurse Certificate from a recognized program
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE(S)

  • Ability to return to work within 20 minutes when on standby /on-call
  • Appropriate added nursing skills, i.e., medication, d/c IV, catheterization
  • Knowledge of surgical equipment/instruments/ procedures
  • Ability to plan and organize effectively
  • Ability to respond appropriately in an emergency
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates a commitment to ongoing continuing education

DESIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE(S) & EDUCATION

  • Two years recent operating room (perioperative) experience preferred
  • Clinical Nurse Educators that offer on-site training
  • Clinical Scholars available for on unit assistance and questions
  • Preceptor/Peer Mentorship Opportunities
  • Collaborative Team Environment
  • Nurse Support Line (Experienced Nurses or Registered Respiratory Therapists available for advice on non-emergent issues)
