Design Manager - Gloucestershire
Salary:
Up to £75,000 + package
We're recruiting for an experienced Design Manager to lead design delivery across complex, multi‑sector projects in Gloucestershire. This role sits at the heart of project success - integrating design, managing consultants, influencing strategy, and representing the business with clients and partners.
You'll work alongside senior leaders including Project Directors, Commercial Directors and Construction Directors, ensuring design is coordinated, compliant, efficient and commercially aligned from pre‑construction through delivery.
Key Responsibilities- Deliver design management using strong judgement and sector experience
- Integrate with senior project leadership teams
- Represent the business with clients, consultants and supply chain partners
- Manage complex projects across varied sectors and procurement routes
- Support work winning through bids, presentations and relationship‑building
- Manage consultant and specialist designer input through pre‑construction
- Lead design reviews, approvals and documentation control
- Manage interfaces with Planning, Building Control and other authorities
- Report progress to senior design leaders at key milestones
- Navigate internal governance including bid reviews, monthly project reviews and audits
- Appropriate CSCS card
- Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or similar
- Ability to plan, manage and monitor design in line with Principal Designer duties
- Strong written and verbal communication across technical and non‑technical audiences
- Confident decision‑making and clear direction setting
- Ability to negotiate and direct senior consultants
- Strong presentation skills
- Competent IT capability across Microsoft Office, PDF editing, InDesign and BIM platforms
- Thorough knowledge of design and construction processes
- Understanding of legislation, regulatory frameworks and industry standards
- Strong knowledge of CDM 2015, Building Safety Act, and RIBA Work Stages
- Knowledge of technical design, construction details and standard forms of contract (JCT, NEC, CM, MC)
- Understanding of sustainability requirements and digital project delivery (BIM, CDEs)
- Commercial awareness including contract conditions, deliverables and liability
- Experience managing consultants, design teams and client interfaces
- Experience delivering safety initiatives and sustainable outcomes
- Experience administering consultant appointments and project control mechanisms
- Champion the Incident & Injury Free (IIF) culture
- Build strong relationships with clients, consultants and supply chain
