Medical Assistant provides patient care to clinic patients under the supervision of Physician, APRN or Office Administrator.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES- Support Corporate mission to provide quality, cost-effective health care in a positive and productive work environment.
- Adhere to corporate values of respect, quality service, teamwork, simplicity and creativity.
- Attend all mandatory company in-services.
- Promote and participate in performance improvement activities.
- Maintain and update job description.
- Comply with all applicable state and federal laws by conducting job in an ethical manner as outlined by Crittenden Community Hospital procedures and policies and in accordance with the Corporate Compliance Plan.
- Call patients to designated prep rooms.
- Greet and escort patients from the waiting room to examination rooms if needed.
- Prepare patient for physician examination:
- Assesses patient.
- Obtains subjective and objective data.
- Obtains vital signs, height and weight.
- Instructs the patient on appropriate undress for examination.
- Positions patient appropriately observing safety guidelines alignment.
- Reviews allergies, medications and immunization, medical and surgical history with patient.
- Explains tests and procedures to patients.
- Documents data obtained legibly in electronic chart.
- Screen patient for appropriate information and document pertinent information in the chart.
- Keep information in patient charts tidy and current.
- Document each patient contact.
- Record phone calls from patients.
- Maintain current and accurate documentation on each patient.
- Document vital signs of patient (blood pressure, temperature) at each visit.
- Record weight of patient at each visit.
- Take medical history information.
- Document no shows and cancellations.
- Dates and initials each vial of medication when opened.
- Prepare patients for examination by physician.
- Provide clean exam table paper for patient to sit on.
- Administer tests and treatments as ordered by the Physician or APRN’s.
- Assist the Physician or APRN’s as needed.
- Check rooms weekly for necessary supplies; restock supplies weekly;
Clean patient rooms between each patient. Ensure that exam rooms are prepared for the day. - Prepare specimens and pap smears for send out to the reference lab and maintain log.
- Report malfunction of medical equipment to Clinic Supervisor.
- Clean and sterilize equipment. Prepare surgical trays as instructed by Physician or APRN’s.
- Administer medications to pediatric and adult patients including subcutaneous and intramuscular injections and TB skin tests, as ordered by the Physician or APRN’s. Observe, record, and report patient’s condition and reaction to drugs and treatments.
- Assist Physician or APRN’s with office procedures, including gynecological examinations, pap smears, skin lesion removal, suture removal, specimen collection, ear irrigations, and wound and burn dressing. Apply orthopedic devices, including arm slings; wrist, leg, ankle and shoulder splints; and rib belts. Instruct patients in use of crutches. Perform ace wrapping.
- Wear personal protective equipment as per Exposure Control Plan.
- Present charts and lab/test results to Physician or APRN’s for review. Report lab/test results to patients and follow through with any physician instructions to patients for follow-up or change in medication.
- Answer requests from pharmacies for prescription refills, per Physician or APRN’s instructions.
- Properly dispose of contaminated and disposable items.
- On a daily basis, check all medication and appropriately dispose of out-of-dated medications.
- Instruct patients on how to properly collect urine specimens.
- Respond to incoming telephone calls. Give appropriate instructions to patients. Document patient contact. Refer information to Physician or APRN’s, as indicated.
- Maintain record of narcotics given.
- Maintain work area in a neat and organized manner; keep surrounding area orderly.
- Perform ear lavages, tympanograms, audiograms, vision tests, etc.
