Job Description

The Specialist, Water Treatment is responsible for overseeing and optimizing the operation of water treatment systems across Magna Mining properties to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, protect local ecosystems, and support sustainable water usage.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor and manage the day-to-day operations of water treatment plants, at times performing plant operation and at times managing the employees and contractors that are operating the treatment plants.
  • Ensure efficient operation of chemical dosing systems, filtration units, pumps, and other treatment infrastructure.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure optimal performance of the water treatment equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues that arise within the water treatment systems at two sites, obtaining and managing technical support from vendors and consultants as necessary.
  • Regularly test and analyze water samples for key quality parameters (e.g., pH, turbidity, metals, and suspended solids).
  • Ensure treated water meets the required regulatory standards and environmental permits.
  • Develop and maintain water treatment policies, standards, procedures and manuals.
  • Maintain accurate records of water quality data and ensure proper documentation for regulatory reporting.
  • Prepare reports on water quality performance for internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies.
  • Assess treatment processes and identify areas for improvement in efficiency, cost reduction, and water recovery.
  • Develop and implement process adjustments to optimize water quality and minimize operational costs.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and innovations to improve the effectiveness of the water treatment process.
  • Comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations governing the water treatment process.
  • Assist with the design, installation, and commissioning of new water treatment equipment or systems at the mine site.
  • Work closely with the environmental team, mine operators, and other departments to address water-related issues.
  • Participate in ongoing research and development projects aimed at improving water treatment technologies.
  • Train and mentor junior staff and contractors on the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of water treatment systems.
Requirements
  • Post‑secondary education in a related field.
  • 5 or more years of water treatment experience, ideally in the mining or industrial sector.
  • Sound knowledge of water treatment processes, including filtration, sedimentation, and chemical dosing.
  • Hands‑on experience with water treatment systems, including physical and chemical treatment methods.
  • Experience with water quality testing and regulatory compliance with effluent criteria.
  • Proficiency in field water quality analysis and laboratory testing.
  • Good problem‑solving skills and ability to troubleshoot water pumping and treatment systems.
  • Communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • WHMIS and working with water treatment chemicals.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Flexible hours in response to weather conditions (melt and rain); periodic on‑call.
