Job Description

Hazardous Materials & Occupational Hygiene Technician

As a Hazardous Materials & Occupational Hygiene Technician, you’ll join a collaborative team of occupational/industrial hygienists, EHS compliance professionals, environmental assessment specialists and hazardous materials managers.

You’ll work in a flexible hybrid environment, with the opportunity to travel to a variety of project sites and office locations across Ontario.

Your Impact

Support clients in maintaining compliance with occupational health, safety, construction, and environmental regulations by conducting field assessments, monitoring programs, and maintaining clear documentation.

Conduct building assessments for hazardous materials and designated substances (including asbestos, lead, and mould), using appropriate tools and equipment to safely collect representative samples from building materials.

Provide on-site inspection and oversight during hazardous materials remediation projects, including contractor monitoring, air sampling, and site reporting to support regulatory and industry best-practice compliance.

Participate in occupational exposure assessments for chemical, biological, and physical hazards across a range of workplace settings, helping clients better understand and manage worker exposures.

Assist with indoor air quality and potable/drinking water quality investigations, documenting conditions and contributing to practical, evidence-based recommendations.

Analyze airborne fibre samples and document, interpret, and report results as part of asbestos and related assessment programs.

Prepare clear and technically sound reports and data summaries based on detailed field notes, supporting project teams and clients in informed decision-making.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and clients, representing WSP professionally on-site and in meetings, while supporting a strong health and safety culture.

Skills That Set You Apart

Completion of a college diploma or university degree in occupational hygiene, environmental science, environmental engineering, or a closely related discipline.

Experience in consulting or relevant education in occupational hygiene, environmental science, construction, or a related field, along with an interest in ongoing learning and professional development.

Understanding of occupational health and safety, construction, and environmental legislation in Ontario, with the ability to apply regulatory requirements in practical settings.

Experience or familiarity with hazardous materials and designated substances (e.g., building surveys, asbestos abatement monitoring, mould or lead assessments), and ideally exposure to airborne fibre sample analysis.

Comfort working with data and digital tools, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel for managing and analyzing field and sampling data.

Ability to use tools and equipment as part of fieldwork activities, which may include working at heights (e.g., ladders) and handling equipment or samples (with accommodations available where needed).

Strong organizational skills and the ability to work both independently in the field and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Willingness to travel within the GTA and across Ontario, including occasional overnight stays and some weekend work as project needs arise; access to transportation and eligibility for Federal Reliability and/or Secret Clearance are required.
