Introduction

Join our team as a Board-Certified Physician to deliver expert medical care, guide teams, and shape the future of healthcare at the State of Connecticut Department of Corrections (DOC). This position is to be filled at Mac Dougall Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield, CT, and may also be used to fill future vacancies statewide.

Position Highlights

Schedule:

First shift, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM.

Location:

Mac Dougall Walker Correctional Institution, Suffield, CT.

This hazardous duty position requires a 14‑week hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development, located in Cheshire, CT.

Your Role

Provision of high‑quality medical care is essential to our mission of leading safe and secure facilities while ensuring the wellness of inmates, staff, and the general public. Key clinical responsibilities include:

  • Infirmary and in‑patient level care; pediatric and youth populations (in certain locations).
  • Emergency triage and infectious disease management (in certain locations).
  • Charting with a modern electronic health record.
  • Collaborating with nursing and administrative support.

As a member of the Health Services Unit, you will have the opportunity to be part of a 700‑member team dedicated to improving the health of nearly 13,000 patients, provide public service to a vulnerable population, and gain exposure to varied medical pathologies.

Safety and security are a priority component of this responsibility as it pertains to staff, victims, citizens and offenders.

Responsibilities

Examples of Duties:

  • Provide 24‑hour medical supervision to specified groups of patients and facility coverage as scheduled, including on‑call and weekend coverage.
  • Make rounds and provide direct care and oversee multi‑disciplinary treatment teams.
  • Coordinate the work of medical staff with related programs.
  • Review treatment plans, medical records, diagnoses and patient discharge plans for adherence to policies and organisational standards.
  • Provide education and training (e.g., grand rounds, case conferences).
  • Assign, oversee, and evaluate work of staff and on‑site night duty physicians.
  • Conduct and/or participate in meetings on medical and administrative policy, research programs, medical programme development and treatment techniques.
  • Assess, examine and evaluate patients for admission or discharge.
  • Perform utilization review and management functions.
  • Attend court hearings as a state witness.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Office of the Chief Medical Examiner Specific Duties:

  • Perform autopsies, investigations of sudden and medically unattended deaths.
  • Conduct scene investigations, make inquiries into circumstances of death.
  • Compare findings at the scene of death with autopsy results.
  • Testify about findings in courts of law.
  • Exchange information and work with municipal and state police, health departments, and other agencies.
  • Participate in educational programmes for medical and law‑enforcement students and officials.
  • Perform related duties as required.
