Position: Principal Physician (40 Hour)

Location:

Mac Dougall Walker Correctional Institution, Suffield, CT.

Schedule:

Monday‑Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Hazardous duty; 14‑week paid hazardous duty training required at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development in Cheshire, CT.

Salary Range: $241,644 – $315,292 per year (minimum state salary $241,644). Additional compensation: up to $30,000 recruitment incentive plus $3,000 annual bonus for board‑certified physicians and $5,000 bonus for physicians with a second board (e.g., forensic psychiatry, addiction psychiatry).

Your Role

Provision of high‑quality medical care to inmates, staff, and the general public, ensuring the wellness of a vulnerable patient population while maintaining facility security.

  • Infirmary, inpatient level care
  • Pediatric and youth populations (in certain locations)
  • Emergency triage
  • Infectious disease management (in certain locations)
  • Charting with a modern electronic health record
  • Clinical exposure to varied medical pathologies and case presentations
Examples of Duties
  • Provides 24‑hour medical supervision to specified groups of patients and facility coverage as scheduled, including on‑call and weekend coverage
  • Makes rounds and provides direct care and clinical oversight of multi‑disciplinary treatment teams
  • Coordinates work of medical staff with related programs
  • Reviews treatment plans, medical records, diagnoses and patient discharge plans for adherence to policies and the Joint Commission (TJC) and Health Care Financing Authority (HCFA) standards
  • Provides education and training, e.g., grand rounds and case conferences
  • Assigns, oversees and evaluates work of staff and on‑site night duty physicians
  • Conducts and/or participates in meetings on medical and administrative policy, research programs, medical program development and treatment techniques
  • Assesses, examines, evaluates, and diagnoses patients for admission or discharge
  • Monitors the use of special treatment procedures
  • Prescribes appropriate medications and other biologic treatments
  • Consults on difficult and/or complex cases
  • Develops and implements QA/QI process improvement initiatives
  • Prepares and/or reviews reports, medical records and correspondence
  • Performs utilization review and management functions
  • Attends court hearings as a state witness
  • Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
  • Board certification in internal medicine, family medicine, or related specialty
  • License to practice medicine and surgery in Connecticut (temporary license may be granted for up to one year)
  • For the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner: certification in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology and board eligibility in forensic pathology
  • For the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner: required to work evenings/nights on a rotating basis and weekends on a rotating basis at the Farmington facility
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as an Infections Diseases Specialist
  • Specialist in addictions medicine (ASAM) – preferred
  • Bilingual capability – preferred
Special Requirements
  • Must retain a license to practice medicine and surgery in Connecticut; temporary license may be granted for up to one year
  • Office of the Chief Medical Examiner: certification in forensic pathology required within two years of employment
  • Incumbents (except those in OCC) must maintain eligibility for participation in federal health care programs as defined in 42 U.S. § 1320a‑7b(f)
  • May be required to travel
  • May need to work evenings, nights, and weekends on a rotating basis
  • May need to be bilingual
