Correctional Lieutenant

Location:
Mac Dougall-Walker Correctional Institution, Suffield, CT
Salary: $75,499 - $99,749 per year
Job Type: Full-time; 40 hours per week
Shifts:
First, second, and third shift (alternating 5x3 schedule)
- Assist in supervising a large complement of officers on a shift or as a shift supervisor.
- Assume responsibility for the custody and security of inmates, building, and grounds in the absence of a Captain.
- Assign personnel to posts and conduct frequent inspections to evaluate officer performance, effective manning of posts, and enforcement of rules and regulations.
- Oversee staff in performing sensitive investigations and/or tactical operations, and maintain sensitive information.
- Respond to crisis situations in a supervisory capacity.
- Determine training needs for facility personnel.
- Perform administrative tasks necessary to ensure training is conducted.
- Conduct training sessions for personnel in the facility and for the Maloney Center for Training and Staff Development.
- Assist in supervising inmate counts.
- Review and act upon reports submitted by officers and/or other departmental staff.
- Prepare and submit reports on operational, investigatory, and tactical activities; supervise the maintenance of reports and records.
- Make staff evaluations.
- Chair disciplinary committee.
- Transport and guard inmates away from premises, counsel inmates and staff, assist in training new officers, update post orders, physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances, and assist in emergencies.
- Minimum:
Four (4) years of experience in correctional work. - Substitution:
College training in corrections, behavioral sciences, or criminal justice may be substituted for the General Experience (up to 1 year). - Special:
High school diploma or GED required. - Preferred:
Experience working in a Unit Management system; participation in use of force; familiarity with restrictive status (SRG, Chronic, High Security, Specialized); conflict resolution between staff; effective communication; proven ability to de‑escape offenders; decision‑making ability; superior writing skills; influence/persuasion; superior organizational skills. - Physical:
Adequate health, strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and visual/auditory acuity required; medical examination may be required.
- Must possess general good health and the physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and visual/auditory acuity required to perform all duties.
- Comprehensive medical examination, including controlled‑substance screening, may be required.
Incumbents may be exposed to a considerable danger of injury or assault by inmates.
