Academy Camps is an overnight sports‑specific sleepaway experience on the campus of Suffield Academy (CT). We are seeking an experienced female Basketball Coach to join our coaching and camp counselor staff for girls dorms during the 2025 summer season.

Overview

Our Basketball Coach will support the Director of Basketball and peer coaches to deliver a program designed to improve physical, mental, and emotional skills for our athletes, focusing on sports‑specific skills, game IQ, love of the game, and overall fitness. The program also emphasizes confidence, growth mindset, and teamwork. In addition, coaches serve as Dorm Counselors, overseeing a group of 10‑15 campers, participating in camp activities, and fostering a supportive camp environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement the Academy Camps Basketball Program to help athletes achieve their goals.
  • Mentor camper athletes to advance athletic, emotional, and social growth.
  • Apply basic youth development principles in communication, relationship building, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
  • Live in a dorm with other coaches, manage the dorm as a unified team, and maintain cleanliness and safety.
  • Get to know each camper, respond to individual needs, and model good self‑care and independent living skills.
  • Assist in planning and participating in evening programs, special events, and camp functions.
  • Actively participate in staff training, meetings, and provide constructive feedback during supervision.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • 4+ years of competitive playing experience (required); collegiate level preferred.
  • Desire to develop and improve as a coach (required); coaching experience preferred.
  • Experience working with youth in sports or educational programs (required).
  • Excellent relationship builder who quickly connects, builds trust, and establishes rapport.
  • Goal‑oriented and motivated to help athletes reach their goals.
  • Creative problem‑solver with an empathetic approach to customer service, team management, and asking for help when needed.
  • Growth mindset: open to feedback, learning, and continuous improvement.
Expectations, Compensation, and Benefits
  • Full summer session:
    June 22 – August 8, requiring on‑site presence for pre‑season training and post‑camp.
  • Competitive compensation: $2,500 – $4,000, includes room and board.
  • Live on campus; share a dorm room with a co‑dorm counselor.
  • Referral bonus: $250 per camper enrolled.
