Special Education Teacher - Adaptive Curriculum
Position Purpose: Under the general supervision of the School Principal, maximize the learning experience of students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living by implementing district‑approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress, addressing specific needs, and providing a safe learning environment.
Essential Functions- Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations to identify learning issues and recommend actions to overcome them.
- Participate in PPTs and assist in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for students.
- Assist students and teaching staff in implementing IEPs and behavior management plans.
- Coordinate with outside agencies, organizations, state and federal authorities as needed.
- Coordinate with administrators and other staff to ascertain students’ abilities and needs, and familiarize stakeholders with social work services.
- Serve as a resource to students and parents, providing counseling that leads to personal growth and behavioral management; act as liaison between home and school.
- Continue to acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, professional meetings, research, and maintaining relationships with higher education institutions and the business community.
- Organize and maintain a system for accurate record‑keeping and provide student information to prospective colleges and employers as required.
- Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication.
- Assist in the orientation of new teachers and provide in‑service training and guidance.
- Select and requisition appropriate books, aids, supplies, and equipment and maintain inventory records.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators.
- Uses standard office equipment such as personal computer, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
- Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
- Knowledge of special education principles, testing, and instructional methods.
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action‑plan formulation.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Works in standard office and school building environments.
Certification / License- Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license in special education adaptive curriculum.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
- Successful prior special education teaching experience relevant to grade level preferred.
- Salary Range: $60,000 – $93,446. An additional $2,944 for a master’s degree.
- Contract:
10 months. - Benefits:
