English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Under the direction of the Building Principal and the Chief Academic Officer, the English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher provides support for students who are identified as English Language Learners in a variety of settings including co-teaching, small group instruction, one-on-one, and consultation with classroom teachers.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

  • Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate instructional programming to meet the needs of ELL students.
  • Collaborate with the ELL team on programming, data analysis, and instructional planning.
  • Serve as a resource to classroom teachers to help ELL students achieve academically in the classroom.
  • Serve as a resource for colleagues by modeling instructional strategies, identifying and developing instructional resources, and providing professional development related to the needs of ELL students.
  • Use language teaching strategies to increase English proficiency for students who speak a language other than English as home.
  • Evaluate the language needs of students whose families speak a language other than English at home and recommend appropriate language support.
  • Administer a language screener to students for whom a language barrier is impeding their academic success. Administer formative assessments.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development including ELL staff meetings.
  • Communicate language needs and progress of the ELLs with classroom teachers, administrators and families.
  • Familiarize yourself with the current ELL Teachers Manual including programming guides and required forms.
  • Create a schedule that best meets the needs of the language students.
  • Connect ELL families with school events.
  • Create individual language goals for students who benefit from language support.
  • Advocate for the needs of the ELL students.
  • Communicate effectively with students, administrators, parents, school staff, and members of the school community.
  • Fulfill Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) compliance requirements related to this position.
  • Continue to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
  • Comply with applicable district, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  • Attend work regularly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Maintain knowledge of software and equipment used to perform duties, such as student information systems, word processing database, spreadsheets, e-mail, and office equipment.
