Job Duties

Do you enjoy working with the public? The Western Tidewater Health District is seeking a highly qualified Environmental Health Manager to join our healthcare team. The Western Tidewater Health District services the City of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County, and the City of Franklin. This role is vital to the Environmental Health Department. It will oversee the food, soil and sewage, and rabies programs.

The successful candidate will possess knowledge of all Environmental Health programs as well as epidemiology, leadership, and management principles. They will be responsible for oversight of staffing, financial resources, regulatory and public resources, administrative and operational actions, policy and quality assurance.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 31 local health districts.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of all Environmental Health (EH) programs as well as epidemiology, leadership, and management principles
  • Skills in program management, risk assessment, software automation, coaching/leading, and supervision
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on technical reports
  • Ability to manage collaboratively complex, multifaceted EH programs, develop and manage teams, and create shared visions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, the public, and state and local government officials
  • Ability to handle difficult and rapidly changing scenarios
Additional Considerations
  • Knowledge and experience in public health, environmental health or science, and additional experience in management or administration
  • NEHA Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) credentialed
  • Environmental Health Specialist Senior or Environmental Health Technical Specialist certifications preferred
