NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306‑bed medical center serving residents of eastern Long Island. The facility hosts the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, an advanced heart disease diagnostic and treatment center, and a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services including women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. The Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center delivers comprehensive and specialized care for patients with traumatic injuries.

The Stroke Center is designated a Primary Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health and offers neurologist‑available care 24/7. The hospital also operates multiple outpatient sites, including an outpatient wound care center, a hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

Position Summary

Registered Nurse – Emergency Department (Full‑Time Day Shift – Alternate Weekend – NSG‑Emergency De.). In this role the candidate provides professional nursing care in accordance with physician treatment plans, ensures patient comfort and well‑being, collaborates with the interdisciplinary health team, directs other nursing team members, and participates in new employee orientation.

Job Responsibilities
  • Collect patient health data involving the patient, family, and other health care providers.
  • Perform initial assessment based on patient presentation.
  • Record relevant data in the nursing component of the Interdisciplinary Admission Assessment.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the special needs of each age group, culture, and patients with disabilities.
  • Perform ongoing assessments as established by department policy and patient response.
  • Incorporate discharge planning into the admission process.
  • Analyze assessment data to determine problem identification and expected outcomes individualized to the patient.
  • Combine theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise to anticipate and plan for identified patient and family care needs.
  • Identify actual or potential problems validated with the patient, family, and other health care providers.
  • Identify cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects of patient/family dynamics related to patient care.
  • Recognize patient comfort/pain management needs impacting the plan of care and desired outcome.
  • Identify actual or potential knowledge deficits for the patient and/or family.
  • Communicate expected outcomes to the patient, family, and other health care providers to promote continuity of care.
  • Develop a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcome.
  • Collaborate with the patient, family, and appropriate healthcare providers to develop the plan of care.
  • Formulate a family‑centered plan of care consistent with the assessment of patient needs and the physician's treatment plan; integrate identified cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects of care into the plan.
  • Incorporate teaching and learning principles in the plan of care based on the identified learning needs and developmental level.
  • Assist the patient and family in identifying and securing services to address health‑related needs.
  • Communicate the plan of care to the patient, family, and other health care providers to promote continuity of care.
  • Document the initial plan of care and provide updates as required.
  • Establish realistic goals, set appropriate priorities, and use time efficiently.
  • Implement the plan of care for each patient and perform appropriate patient monitoring.
  • Adapt nursing procedures to meet the needs of the individual patient.
  • Provide education to the patient and family utilizing the educational assessment.
  • Recognize hazards to patient safety and take action to maintain a safe environment.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to implement interventions.
  • Assign or delegate tasks as defined by the state nurse practice act and according to the caregiver's knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrate knowledge regarding drug administration, incompatibilities, contraindications, and adverse effects; seek appropriate resources when uncertain.
  • Comply with medication policy and procedure for order transcription/verification, drug administration and documentation.
