Position: 3rd Class Marine Electrician - Interior Communications (approximately 50% Travel)

3rd Class Marine Electrician - Interior Communications (approximately 50% Travel)

Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) is looking for a 3rd Class Marine Electrician to work in Suffolk, Virginia. 50% travel required within and outside of the continental United States.

Work schedule:

Monday thru Saturday 10 hours a day (as needed).

Responsibilities
  • Install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for various purposes, including interior communications.
  • Maintain and repair electrical systems on marine vessels.
  • Apply troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance skills for electronic equipment on board vessels and in shipyard facilities.
  • Perform routine tasks such as replacing components, wiring circuits, repairing simple electronic equipment, and taking test readings with instruments like digital multimeters, signal generators, semiconductor testers, curve tracers, and oscilloscopes.
  • Work under close supervision, receiving technical guidance. Work is checked frequently for accuracy.
  • Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance consistent with company values.
  • Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures for fleet modernization on US Navy surface ships.
  • Perform duties to layout, fabricate, and install electrical wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic onboard Navy vessels.
  • Read and interpret schematics and blueprints. Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables. Assist with troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment to eliminate problems efficiently.
  • Remove and install cables overhead, along bulkheads, or under the deck.
  • Repair and replace cables/connectors.
  • Use understanding of production processes to complete complicated and non-routine tasks related to installations on shipboard systems and related equipment at company or field locations according to established quality and safety procedures.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
  • Maintain effective communication and relations with supervisor and manager.
  • Remove, plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, and equipment aboard naval vessels.
  • Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections and reconnections on existing and new equipment for a complete installation.
Qualifications
  • Must have a DoD Secret clearance.
  • High school diploma, GED, or industrial/trade school certificate.
  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience operating, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and equipment on-board Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, MSC, or maritime vessels, including HM&E systems and equipment.
  • Familiar with Interior Communications systems such as MC, HYDRA, IVN, IVCN, SATCC, SIWCS.
  • Able to access government installations by obtaining and maintaining a Biometric Defense Identification System (DBIS) credential.
  • Ability to work overtime and weekends upon managerial request.
  • Willing to travel outside Suffolk, Virginia if required.
  • Prior experience with fiber optic cables and multi‑pin connectors.
  • Possess or provide trade‑specific hand tools.
  • Experience working in a team environment and effective communication skills.
  • Understanding and ability to accomplish NSI 009‑73 requirements regarding inspection, testing, installation, removal, and repair of shipboard electrical cabling and electronic equipment.
  • Knowledge of cable installations including banding, terminal boxes, connection boxes, connectors, equipment, penetrations, cableways, and hangers.
  • Experience with MCT, MCP, and stuffing tube operations.
  • Knowledge of bonding and grounding of electrical equipment.
  • Experience with NSI 009‑25 air testing of penetrations.
  • Electrical troubleshooting and testing with multimeters and megohmmeters.
  • Assisting with troubleshooting, maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical distribution systems and associated equipment and cabling.
